What to see

Visits and monuments and other things to see in Florence.

  • What to see
  • The best known set in the city has three elements: the cathedral, the baptistery and the campanile.

  • Piazza del Duomo
  • The Via Flaminia, since the days b.C, crossed the Arno in this point. Florence was then a little village in the surroundings, not the most important one.

  • The Duomo
  • Florence's catedral is one of the largest in the world, after St. Peter's (Rome) St. Paul's (London) and Seville's cathedral.

  • The Campanile
  • The cathedral in Florence, like many others in Italy, has the belltower appart.

  • The Baptistery
  • The baptistery of St. John is a harmonious octagonal building, marble faced, with purist forms and following the romanesque style.

  • Museum of the Opera del Duomo
  • It's sited on the Piazza del Duomo, number 9. It houses diverse pieces and materials, among them some of the elements Brunelleschi used to construct the dome.

  • Piazza della Signoria
  • If the Duomo is the religious centre, the Piazza della Signoria is the political one, where the Vecchio Palace, the Uffizi Palace and the Loggia are sited.

  • The Palazzo Vecchio
  • This old palace, also called della Signoria, changed it's name in the 16th-century, when Cosme I left the palace and moved to the Palazzo Pitti.

  • Galleria degli Uffizzi
  • Beside the palace Cosme I asked on the 16th-century for a building for offices.

  • The Loggia della Signoria
  • In front of the Palazzo Vecchio the tourist will find a building of proud semi-circular arches, from the 14th-century, place for the old Signoria's activities.

  • Piazza of Santa Maria Novella
  • It's another site full of history, though town planning here isn't as tradicional as in other squares in the city.

  • Santa Maria Novella
  • This building was begun in the late 13th-century by the Dominican order in Florence.

  • Santa Croce
  • It's a square where notable tournaments, famous preachings and calcio games (old ball game) have taken place.

  • San Marcos
  • It's another one of the notable sites in the city of Florence.

  • San Lorenzo
  • The San Lorenzo church is sited beside the Medici-Riccardi palace, old seat of the Medici family in Florence.

  • San Miniato
  • San Miniato, sited on a hill, to the south of the Arno and the city, offers an ideal picture of Florence.

  • The Accademy Gallery
  • It's one of the most important museums in Florence, though to visit it you won't spend much time. It fundamentally holds pieces by Michelangelo.

  • The Palazzo Pitti
  • It's a large renaissancist building, constructed for the Pitti family.

  • Other Palaces
  • You'll be amazed by the almost endless amount of magnificent palaces that Florence has.
