Monasterio de la Encarnación

This monastery is one of the most notable religious institutions in Madrid. Of plain construction, it was founded in 1611 by Queen Margaret from Austria, wife of Philip III.

It conserves the castilian style of the 17th-century, paintings by Ribera and Carducho, a Christ by Gregorio Fernández and a mysterious baroque Reliquary Chapel, where an ampoule of blood of San Pantaleón is conserved, and which is supposed to liquefy every year on the date of the death of the saint.

The church has a simple façade of the 17th-century, the rest was built later, it had to be reconstructed after the fire in 1734. It contains art pieces by Bayeau and Carducho. It's in this church where every 27th July the ampoule of San Pantaleon's blood is exhibited. This date is important for thousands of people who visit the temple. It's believed that if the blood doesn't liquefy, next year will come full of disasters.
