In the centre of the city, where the Paseo del Prado meets Alcalá Street, we find the Cibeles fountain, eastern godess that presides the city life on top of a carriage pulled by lions.

It's one of the most beautiful and harmonious urban sets in the city. This fountain is probably the most emblematic figure in Madrid.

Some of the buildings in its surroundings are outstanding too. The
Palacio de las Comunicaciones was built in the 19th-century, with neogothic style combined with industrial lines.
The
Palacio de Linares is sited very near, beautiful residence of the marquis of Linares, a 19th-century building.
Another building beside the fountain is the
Banco de España, also from the 19th-century, of solid architecture and interesting forging.
The set is enriched by the beauty of the streets that meet here and other artistic elements viewable from the square, like the Cuartel General del Ejército (Army Headquarters) or the old office of the Central Bank.
